Freelancing in Sweden – a practical guide for 2026

There are three ways to freelance in Sweden: through an umbrella company, as a sole trader (enskild firma) or through your own limited company (aktiebolag). This guide explains each option, F-tax, VAT and how to invoice clients in Sweden and abroad – in English, with the Swedish terms you will meet.

Three ways to freelance in Sweden

OptionHow it worksProsCons
Umbrella company (egenanställning)Agree with the umbrella company before agreeing the assignment with the client; the umbrella company is the contracting party and invoices the client. You are paid a salary and the company handles tax and contributions. No company of your own, no F-tax, no bookkeeping. Good for trying out freelancing.A fee of usually a few percent of everything you invoice. Limited deductions for your own costs.
Sole trader (enskild firma)You register a business in your own name and invoice clients yourself.Cheap and quick to start, simplified annual accounts, the result is taxed in your personal return. You are personally liable for the business. Self-employment contributions of about 29 % on the profit.
Limited company (aktiebolag)You start a company with at least SEK 25,000 in share capital and work as its employee.Limited liability, separate company taxation and possible dividends under the 3:12 rules; compare total company and owner taxation.More administration: payroll, annual report and the company’s own tax return.

Compare umbrella service fees with a software subscription

Enter annual invoicing excluding VAT and the umbrella fee you have been quoted. This compares two fees, not total business costs or net income.

Fee comparedPer year
Umbrella service feeSEK 36,000
UNIKBOK software subscriptionSEK 2,400

The umbrella service fee is SEK 33,600 higher per year than the software subscription.

This is not a total savings or take-home-pay calculation. Your own business may also have bank, insurance, pension, accounting advice, registration and other costs, plus administration time. Tax and social contributions differ by business form. UNIKBOK is SEK 200/month excluding VAT, before trial discounts; optional automatic bank connection is SEK 500/year. Umbrella services may include benefits or insurance not covered by software.

Which option should you choose?

If you are testing freelancing or have one short assignment, an umbrella company is the simplest start. For regular invoicing, compare the umbrella service fee with the software subscription and all other costs and work of running a business. The calculator compares these two fees only; it does not calculate total savings or take-home pay.

A sole trader can suit freelancers seeking a low setup cost and a simpler year-end. A limited company becomes interesting when the profit grows, when you want limited liability or when clients – often larger IT and consulting buyers – prefer to contract a company.

F-tax: what clients will ask for

Clients in Sweden normally require that you have F-tax approval (F-skatt). It means you pay your own tax and contributions, so the client does not have to withhold tax from your invoice. You apply through verksamt.se when you register your business; in an umbrella company you do not need it.

F-tax in Sweden – how to apply

VAT for freelancers

A Swedish-established business can normally use the small-business VAT exemption if its annual turnover in Sweden is no more than SEK 120,000 in the current calendar year and was no more than that in either of the two preceding calendar years. Exceptions and cross-border registration obligations can apply even below the threshold. Most ordinary consulting services carry 25 % VAT when taxable in Sweden.

For services covered by the general B2B rule, when you sell to a taxable business in another EU country you normally invoice without Swedish VAT (reverse charge): state the client’s VAT number and the words “Reverse charge” on the invoice, and report the sale in the EC sales list (periodisk sammanställning). General-rule B2B services to businesses outside the EU are normally invoiced without Swedish VAT. Exceptions apply, including property-related services; sales to private consumers follow different rules. Verify customer status and the place-of-supply rule before invoicing.

Invoicing as a freelancer

A Swedish invoice must include an invoice number, date, your and the client’s names and addresses, your VAT number when you are VAT registered, a description of the service, the amount excluding VAT, the VAT rate and amount, and the text “Godkänd för F-skatt” when you have F-tax.

Record invoices in the bookkeeping and retain accounting information through the seventh year after the calendar year in which the financial year ended.

Tax and year-end

A sole trader reports the business result on the NE appendix of the personal tax return and can use simplified annual accounts if net turnover is normally no more than SEK 3 million. Preliminary tax is paid monthly according to your preliminary tax decision.

A limited company pays corporate tax on its profit, files its own tax return and an annual report, and pays you a salary through payroll – or dividends under the 3:12 rules.

Residence and work permits

EU/EEA citizens can freelance in Sweden on the same terms as Swedes. Citizens of other countries must verify that their specific residence status permits self-employment. An employment work permit does not automatically authorise running a business. The rules depend on your situation – check the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket) before you start.

Frequently asked questions

Can I freelance in Sweden without a company?

Yes, through an umbrella company (egenanställning). You invoice through them and are paid a salary, in exchange for a fee.

Do I need F-tax as a freelancer?

Clients normally expect F-tax approval when you invoice through your own business. It determines who handles preliminary tax and social contributions; it is not a general legal requirement to operate a business. In an umbrella company you do not need F-tax.

How much does an umbrella company cost?

Usually a few percent of the amount you invoice. Compare the fee with the cost of running your own business.

Should I start a sole trader or a limited company?

A sole trader is cheapest and simplest to start. A limited company gives limited liability and can be more tax-efficient at higher profits. Many freelancers start as sole traders and convert later.

Do I charge VAT to clients outside Sweden?

For services covered by the general B2B rule, to taxable businesses in other EU countries you normally apply reverse charge and invoice without Swedish VAT. General-rule B2B services to businesses outside the EU are normally invoiced without Swedish VAT. Exceptions apply, including property-related services; sales to private consumers follow different rules. Verify customer status and the place-of-supply rule before invoicing.

When do I need to register for VAT?

The small-business exemption normally requires Swedish turnover of at most SEK 120,000 in the current and each of the two preceding calendar years. Cross-border transactions and other exceptions can require registration below that level; check your situation with Skatteverket.

Can I freelance on a work permit?

It depends on the type of permit. A permit tied to one employer usually does not allow it. Check with Migrationsverket.

What does accounting software cost for a freelancer?

UNIKBOK costs SEK 200 per month excluding VAT with invoicing, bookkeeping, VAT and year-end included. New companies get six months free.
