Simplified annual accounts (förenklat årsbokslut)
Template, checklist and NE form rows for sole traders in Sweden
Most sole traders (enskild firma) in Sweden close the year with simplified annual accounts – förenklat årsbokslut. It is an income statement and a balance sheet laid out on the same rows as the NE form in your tax return. Here you can see who may use it, which simplifications apply under K1, how to do it step by step and when the return is due. Fill in the template below in English: the result and equity are calculated for you, and you can print the accounts in Swedish or save them as Word.

What are simplified annual accounts?
Simplified annual accounts (förenklat årsbokslut) are a simpler way to close the financial year. They are regulated by the Swedish Bookkeeping Act and the Accounting Standards Board’s general advice BFNAR 2006:1, known as K1. They consist of an income statement and a balance sheet set out in the same way as the NE form. You do not send them to the Swedish Tax Agency – you keep them with your books – but the figures are transferred to the NE form in your income tax return.
Compared with ordinary annual accounts you do not need notes, some valuation rules are simplified, and you may use the cash method during the year.
Who can prepare simplified annual accounts?
A sole trader whose net turnover is normally no more than SEK 3 million a year may prepare simplified annual accounts. The same limit applies to, for example, trading partnerships where all partners are individuals. A single year above the limit does not force a change – it is the normal turnover that counts.
If turnover is normally above SEK 3 million, the business must prepare ordinary annual accounts. A limited company (aktiebolag) can never use simplified annual accounts – it must always prepare an annual report.
The K1 simplifications
Everyone who may prepare simplified annual accounts may also use the cash method (kontantmetoden). You then book invoices when they are paid, but at year-end unpaid customer and supplier invoices must still be included as receivables and payables.
Inventory worth no more than half a price base amount in total – 29,600 SEK for 2026 – does not have to be included in the balance sheet. Machinery and equipment costing no more than half a price base amount may be expensed in the year of purchase.
Advance payments that relate to next year only need to be accrued if they exceed SEK 5,000. Provisions are not made in simplified annual accounts, and untaxed reserves are included in equity. For financial years starting after 31 December 2024, K1 also states that costs and receivables are recorded excluding deductible input VAT, and that the owner’s private income tax is not booked in the business.
Step by step
1. Reconcile the bank account, cash and the tax account at 31 December against the statements.
2. With the cash method: book all unpaid customer and supplier invoices at 31 December. With the invoice method: check that the ledgers match the accounts.
3. Reconcile VAT and book the VAT return for the last period.
4. Count the inventory. If it is worth more than 29,600 SEK, include it at the lower of cost and actual value.
5. Book depreciation on machinery and equipment and accrue advance payments above SEK 5,000 that relate to next year.
6. Book private withdrawals and deposits and reconcile equity: opening equity plus deposits minus withdrawals plus the result must equal assets minus liabilities.
7. Set out the income statement and balance sheet on the NE form rows, fill in the NE form and keep the accounts with the supporting documents.
From the accounts to the NE form
The income statement goes to rows R1–R11 and the balance sheet to rows B1–B16 of the NE form. The booked result on R11 is the starting point for the tax part of the form.
Tax adjustments are not booked in a sole trader’s accounts. The tax allocation reserve (periodiseringsfond, at most 30% of the basis), the expansion fund, interest allocation and the standard deduction for self-employment contributions are all made directly on the NE form.
When must the accounts be ready?
The NE form is based on the accounts, so they must be ready before you file. For the 2026 financial year the income tax return is due on Monday 3 May 2027, because 2 May is a Sunday. If an accounting firm helps you, it can apply for an extension (byråanstånd), normally until mid-June.

Frequently asked questions about simplified annual accounts
What are simplified annual accounts (förenklat årsbokslut)?
Simpler year-end accounts for sole traders whose turnover is normally no more than SEK 3 million. They consist of an income statement and a balance sheet on the NE form rows and follow BFNAR 2006:1 (K1).
Who can prepare simplified annual accounts?
Sole traders and, for example, trading partnerships with only individuals as partners, if net turnover is normally no more than SEK 3 million a year. Limited companies always prepare an annual report.
Do I send the simplified annual accounts to the Swedish Tax Agency?
No. You transfer the figures to the NE form in your tax return and keep the accounts for 7 years together with your books.
When is the deadline?
The accounts must be ready before you file your tax return. For the 2026 financial year the deadline is 3 May 2027. With an accounting firm extension you can normally file until mid-June.
Can I use the cash method?
Yes. Everyone who may prepare simplified annual accounts may use the cash method. At year-end, unpaid customer and supplier invoices must still be booked as receivables and payables.
Do I have to include my inventory?
Only if it is worth more than half a price base amount, 29,600 SEK for 2026. Otherwise the whole purchase can be expensed.
How do I depreciate equipment?
Equipment costing no more than 29,600 SEK may be expensed directly. More expensive equipment is depreciated over several years and the depreciation is shown on row R10.
Is the tax allocation reserve booked in a sole trader’s accounts?
No. The tax allocation reserve, the expansion fund and interest allocation are only made on the NE form, not in the books.
Why is the printed document in Swedish?
Because it follows the Swedish layout of BFNAR 2006:1 and the NE form, and it is kept with your Swedish books. The labels in the template are in English so you can fill it in easily.
Can I do it myself?
Yes. If you have reconciled bank and tax account and booked everything during the year, it usually takes a few hours. The template checks that equity adds up.
